While Sandy and Renee both volunteer their time for nothing, we donate $10 for every spayed animal to cover the cost of the materials that are used, plus we cover travel expenses and lunch . Since December, Sandy has managed to spay 15 dogs (and 4 cats!) at clinics that we have arranged. We are hoping that over the coming 6 months we will be able to organise clinics for a further 25 dogs. At the moment, we have 40 dogs on our list and that is just in Puerto Lindo. We’ve also been busy delivering some food as and when it’s most needed, providing tick and flea treatment and also administering some birth control to several females in the village to help manage the puppy population before Sandy can get her well meaning claws on them.
Our biggest news is that we had to move away from Jose del Mar. Luckily, we were able to take 7 of our dogs with us (2 females and the 5 pups). We only have 1 pup left now after finding loving homes for the remainder. Our wonderful smiler Balls has also happily found his home in the village and greets us with ecstatic yelps every time we return!
So now our new home is in Puerto Lindo (only 10 km away from before), and our primary focus here has been on trying to manage the dog population through a spaying initiative. We have a fabulous vet called Sandy who worked in America for many years before coming to Panama to retire. She is practically a wizard with the dogs, operating on them in what is probably world record time and under almost any conditions and handling complications expertly. This wonderful lady has spayed animals in all manner of pop up ‘surgeries’ from our front room to the gorgeous white sands of Playa Blanca. It is a true testament to her skills that she can create and maintain sterile conditions in such a wide variety of places and then perform such delicate surgery. She is not fazed by anything, and without her help we could never have done as much as we have. We are truly grateful and we will be putting some of our next donation money toward making sure Sandy and Renee (her wonderful assistant) both get a bottle of wine to relax after the next clinic!
